Today, delegates from both Conferences came together in the European Guide and Scout Conference for the whole day. The day’s proceedings were opened by Dr France Cukjati, the President of the National Assembly of Slovenia, who in the keynote speech urged the delegates to continue to provide the Guiding and Scouting programmes for young people, which make a positive contribution to the towns and villages and the world in which we live.
The rest of the morning in the Joint Conference was devoted to working on the joint work of the Europe Region WAGGGS and the European Scout Region for the coming Triennium. Both the Europe Committee WAGGGS and the European Scout Committee have worked together to identify areas of work where the general objectives were very similar and where joint activities and initiatives would maximize the resources available. Following an explanation of the process so far, the delegates worked in small groups to identify possible actions, which were prioritized by each national delegation at the end of the session.
The European Conferences are an ideal opportunity for the leading volunteers from each association to discuss and share their experiences with each other. This was the purpose of the Network Sessions on Tuesday afternoon – the final session of the day. Delegates were able to come together in small groups and discuss common issues or share best practice in according to their particular function in their association (for example if they were an International or Programme Commissioner) or special area of interest such as EU funding, national youth policy or working with diverse or new publics.
