Countdown to the World Conference

3 July 2008

More than 80 people are involved in photocopying, setting up offices, decorations, displays, as well as building the WAGGGS and the GGASA shop at the Birchwood Hotel in Johannesburg.

Among the crew preparing for the 33rd World Conference are 50 adults and young volunteers from GGASA who are pitching in and working very hard to help get everything ready before the delegates arrive. National Director of GGASA, Rosemary Swemmer, says about these pre-conference days: “It’s been hectic, incredibly busy, but it’s been very interesting to interact with Member Organizations and WAGGGS staff”.

But the preparatory began long ago, in 2005 in fact, starting when GGASA prepared their bid: “It’s been three years of many challenges and also frustrations, but the Association has grown in capacity and also leadership. Many people involved in the preparations have taken leadership positions.”

Sunday, Registration day

Around 500 participants representing some 125 countries are expected to attend the event. Registration takes place on Sunday from 8.30am until 8pm in the Plenary Hall Foyer. On Sunday from 4 to 6pm there will also be an orientation session about the World Conference.

GGASA is preparing their Welcoming Ceremony for Monday evening at 7.30pm and the South African Night which will unfold on Tuesday at 7pm.

Rosemary hopes that with all the hard work of the Association members “we will be able to present proudly a South African Conference”.
