A double celebration for 70 Guides and Scouts
5 January 2010
The 1st January 2010 was a double celebration for 70 Guides and Scouts from Germany, Italy, Portugal, United Kingdom, and Ireland, taking part in eurolife.03 – an event for 14-18 year olds organized by the Europe Region WAGGGS, hosted by Verband Christlicher Pfadfinderinnen Und Pfadfinder (VCP) and that took place in Burg Reineck, Schlossberg in Germany between 27th December – 2nd January.
As well as celebrating New Year’s Day, they were the first Guides and Scouts in Europe to start celebrating the centenary of international Girl Guiding/Girl Scouting which began in 2010. During the event, the participants took part in a special tree planting ceremony – to reflect the first annual theme of the three-year centenary celebrations which are being organized by WAGGGS.
Celebration was not the only theme of eurolife.03. During the 6-day event, the participants experienced challenge and adventure through exciting outdoor activities; and learnt about WAGGGS Global Action Theme on the Millennium Development Goals helping them make their personal choice about how they can speak out, educate and take action and make their contribution to the achievement of the MDGs. They will also discover how to connect the actions they take at local or national level so that “together we can change our world.”
The Europe Committee member responsible for eurolife.03, Finna Sigurdardottir , said:
“taking part in eurolife.03 is a wonderful way to start the European celebrations of 100 years of international Girl Guiding/Girl Scouting. But it’s more than a celebration – we hope eurolife will inspire the participants to take action on issues affecting girls and young women - like access to education, climate change or the fight against HIV/AIDS - and make a difference to the world around them”.
