Chairman's Message - Summer 2008

Dear friends in Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting,

I hope the summer is going well, full of Girl Guiding/Girl Scouting activities that involve more and more young girls and boys all over Europe . It was great to see so many of you at the World Conference where it was possible to share some of the successes of the new committee over the past year as well as some of the challenges ahead.

It was important for me and for the rest of the committee to receive once more your support. Thank you for all the contributions you have made in different forms to the success of our work.

After one year of work I can say very proudly that I do have a young and committed young team working with me and the constant support of a very competent staff team.
Some events unfortunately were cancelled but many others have successfully taken place.  We visited many countries and have given support to all who have asked for it!

The cooperation with WOSM is continuing to grow. The working groups of both regions are now connected and we hope that by working more jointly than ever we can more effectively reach our objectives.

I hope you have enjoyed the conference and were able to take the opportunity to share and learn from each other in the beautiful surroundings of .

We, as WAGGGS, now have a new strategy in place for 2009 to 2011 although some of the financial aspects will need some additional work after the decisions taken by the conference.

The Centenary and the Global Action Theme will accompany us all along the way and will be a great opportunity to ensure that WAGGGS is more known throughout the world!  More information on how Member Organizations can get involved at European and global level will be available in the coming months.

So the spirit is high and our finances are healthy. However we need to keep working to ensure the additional funding we will need due to the quota decision so that we will be able to carry out all our plans.

The forthcoming months will bring some very important events for the Europe Region, including  the Round Tables on Membership and Diversity.  These will provide a key opportunity to share and move forward on the issues related to reaching new publics and strengthen and retain our current members and adults. It is being organized jointly and since this is a crucial issue in both our Regions we expect a high participation at this event.

The next two major challenges are the two large events that will happen between now and the Conference in 2010:-

Roverway 2009 -organized jointly with WOSM – European Region for Rovers and Rangers

eurolife.03 which we hope will be a special and unique event open to Guides and Scouts aged 14-18.

We definitely need your co-operation in promoting these two events to your members to give them the opportunity to participate in challenging activities and experience the special international dimension of Guiding and Scouting.

In spite of all the good things we have done we know that there is always room for improvement. To make these improvements is essential that you get in touch with us. Talk to the committee member who is the contact for your Country and tell her what WAGGGS can do to support you better and help you to improve the educational impact that your Association has on young people!

girls worldwide say “together we can change our world!”  Are you ready to accept this challenge?

We are and we expect you to be, as always, at our side in the coming months as we look forward to the next European Conferences in !
